IN ITS seven years of existence, the Moral Regeneration Movement has failed to deliver - despite receiving millions of rands allocated to it by the Department of Arts and Culture, Parliament heard yesterday.

MPs in the National Assembly grilled the department's officials, saying that some provinces - such as North West - still did not have any structures in place, despite the millions spent.

The movement was launched in 2003 by then deputy president Jacob Zuma. It currently falls under the control of Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe.

Between 2003 and 2008, R16million has been spent on the project.

Mbulelo Jokweni, of the department's cultural promotion and development branch, said "there is still a lot that needs to be done and there is a lack of coordination".

Congress of the People MP Phumelele Tshiqela agreed, saying there were no concrete projects.

ANC MP Tshenuwani Farisani said the project needs to address critical issues in society - like corruption and crime.

The DA's Annelie Lotriet said the movement should stand up and stop the offensive statements uttered by members of certain political parties. She said there was presently no evidence of moral regeneration in society.

Minister of Arts and Culture Lulu Xingwana told the committee that "the Moral Regeneration Movement needs to answer questions about a lack of delivery, in detail".

Xingwa said an evaluation would be made and a report brought to parliament's portfolio committee some time this year.
