TWO police officers have been arrested in Polokwane for allegedly soliciting a bribe from a five-man gang smugglingillegal cigarettes.

The police said the five suspects were transporting bundles of illegal cigarettes when two police officers on highway patrol stopped them.

The two police officers then allegedly demanded bribes to allow the smugglers to continue on their way.

The incident reportedly took place on Monday afternoon.

The bundles of cigarettes, the value of which has been estimated at R100000, were being transported in a van.

It is alleged that the suspected smugglers failed to pay the full bribe required and were ordered to offload the cigarettes on a street in the Limpopocapital.

Police spokesperson Superintendent Moatshe Ngoepe said the police, after receiving a tip-off, arrived to find their fellowofficers on the scene.

Ngoepe said the two arrested officers were an inspector and a constable. He warned that police officers involved in corrupt activities would be dealt with in the same way as criminals.

The suspected smugglers are expected to appear in court for dealing in illegal cigarettes.

The two officers will face charges of corruption.
