Sibusiso Nyathi was not asked to plead to charges of dealing in drugs and was granted bail of R500.
The matter was postponed pending a decision by the director of public prosecutions whether to prosecute or not.
Nyathi, 38, was arrested after a whistle- blower informed other warders that he was in possession of dagga on the prison premises.
Barberton police spokesperson Sergeant Jabu Ndubane confirmed that Nyathi was allegedly found in possession of dagga with a street value of R2000.
