DA councillor suspended

THE DA in KwaZulu-Natal has suspended its Hibiscus Coast municipality councillor Ayanda Mbombo.

Party spokesperson Sizwe Mchunu said Mbombo was suspended after it emerged he was allegedly being investigated by police and the Hawks over his "business operations".

"After consulting with him and in terms of our constitution and code of conduct, we came to a decision that he be suspended," he said.

Mbombo confirmed his suspension yesterday.

Mchunu declined to divulge further information as the matter was still under police investigation, but insisted that the party wanted voters to have a high regard for the DA.

Hawks spokesperson Musa Zondi denied that they were investigating Mbombo.

"We know nothing about such an investigation. Maybe they (the DA) are the ones who are investigating him," he said.

Municipal speaker Ronnie Nair said as far as he was concerned Mbombo was in office as he "had not been duly informed by the DA".
