Murder bid ends in running battle

TWO men have been arrested for attempted murder after they allegedly shot and wounded a man at a block of flats in Manenberg, Western Cape police say.

TWO men have been arrested for attempted murder after they allegedly shot and wounded a man at a block of flats in Manenberg, Western Cape police say.

Captain Frederick van Wyk said the police were on a routine patrol on Sunday night when they heard gunshots at Matilda Court.

Community members pointed out a white vehicle from which they claimed the shots were fired. The occupants of the vehicle spotted the police and fled - leading to a high speed chase.

"During this pursuit the suspects fired several shots at police. The car chase ended up in Mitchells Plain, where the police managed to corner and apprehend the two suspects.

"We opened cases of attempted murder and possession of two unlicensed firearms.

"The suspects, aged 22 and 31, will appear in the Athlone magistrate's court soon," he said.

"The possibility that the incident could be gang-related cannot be ruled out." - Sapa
