Employees to chip in with own cash to help the needy

EMPLOYED South Africans are urged to donate their time and money to charity as part of the Employee Volunteer Week campaign.

EMPLOYED South Africans are urged to donate their time and money to charity as part of the Employee Volunteer Week campaign.

The campaign, which begins today and runs until Sunday, is part of the Charities Aid Foundation Southern Africa (CAF), aimed at creating a platform for employed people to contribute to social development.

Mamo Mohapi of CAF said: "Employees will also get a chance to support the not-for-profit sector. We encourage corporates to also volunteer."

She said the week would also benefit employees and companies since they get to learn new skills. The company would benefit from such skills.

"We encourage cooperation among companies so that the work that has been done is not duplicated," she said.

Mohapi said volunteering had led to more sustainable partnerships between people and charity organisations.

She said since 2005, 50 companies and 25 000 volunteers had taken part in this annual event.

Mohapi said this year they would increase their support for schools.

Desiree Storey of First Rand said all six companies in their corporation would take part.

"At least 22 percent of the 43 000 employees in the group will participate. We are also trying to get more management, including CEO Sizwe Nxasana, to volunteer," she said.

She said First Rand would match any donation, whether cash or time, donated by its employees.

First Rand is made up of six companies that include FNB, OUTSurance and Momentum.
