Suspended Athletics SA board members cry foul

SUSPENDED Athletics SA board members have accused Sascoc of dragging its feet in the case over their handling of the Caster Semenya gender tests to prevent them from participating in the proposed April elections.

SUSPENDED Athletics SA board members have accused Sascoc of dragging its feet in the case over their handling of the Caster Semenya gender tests to prevent them from participating in the proposed April elections.

Kakata Maponyane and Larraine Lane, two members of the suspended ASA board, said they were unhappy that the SA Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee were consistently dealing with their issue in the media.

Sascoc issued a series of media releases on the matter, including one stating that they have commissioned a forensic audit to investigate alleged financial irregularities at ASA.

In a letter to Sascoc president Gideon Sam, Lane said: "Unsubstantiated releases regarding ASA board members highlighted in the media have caused great distress to the company to which I'm affiliated, my colleagues, clients and family."

Lane said the ASA board's suspension by Sascoc was based on the Semenya case, adding that the disciplinary case on the matter should have been heard a long time ago.

For his part, Maponyane said: "The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, to which South Africa is a signatory, condemns public prosecution of any individual by anybody.

"One has observed how this right has been grossly violated by those responsible for managing ASA. We are having a trial in the media, our reputations are damaged."

Leonard Chuene and his board, as well as senior staff members, were suspended by Sascoc in November.
