Soweto FA wants more Sereros

THULANI Serero has become the poster boy of the Soweto Football Association (SFA's) development programme after his rapid rise in the sport.

THULANI Serero has become the poster boy of the Soweto Football Association (SFA's) development programme after his rapid rise in the sport.

The Ajax Cape Town attacking midfielder, a former Senaoane Gunners player who was discovered through the SFA's development structure, is currently in Brazil with Bafana Bafana.

"Thulani is now a role model to most of his peers not only in Soweto but countrywide," said SFS chief executive Phil Mogodi yesterday at Maponya Mall in Soweto, where he addressed the media.

He intends to produce more Sereros, with the continued support of Philips, Discovery, Clinix, Nike and Putco.

"They help us ensure that competitive football is played regularly in Soweto," Mogodi said. "We now have sponsored leagues catering for various age groups in Soweto. There is also a new league for the academies. We are working hard to recruit more youngsters into football, that will form part of our mass participation programme."

Mogodi said the association wanted to have at least three of their graduates playing for Bafana Bafana in the 2010 Fifa World Cup. Besides Serero, there is Teko Modise (Orlando Pirates), Simphiwe Tshabalala (Kaizer Chiefs) and Lebohang Mokoena (Mamelodi Sundowns) in the Bafana training squad in Brazil.
