Spies, Rossouw back for bulls

THE good news for the Bulls ahead of their Super 14 game against the Highlanders on Saturday is that loose forward Pierre Spies and lock Danie Rossouw will be ready for action.

THE good news for the Bulls ahead of their Super 14 game against the Highlanders on Saturday is that loose forward Pierre Spies and lock Danie Rossouw will be ready for action.

Spies has recovered from a knee injury he picked up three weeks ago playing against the Brumbies, while Rossouw has overcome a neck strain.

Though the Bulls possess considerable depth in the loose forward department, the athleticism of Spies is always a bonus.

His lineout prowess also adds an extra dimension to the team, as does his ability to get over the advantage line.

Still topping the log with a game in hand, the Bulls should not have too much of a struggle against a Highlanders side that was dished out a rugby lesson by the Stormers in Cape Town at the weekend.

Mind you, the Bulls are only too aware of the importance of bonus points and will be keen on getting another 50 points on the scoreboard for the fourth time this season.

For the Lions, round five of the Super 14 sees them up against the Waratahs in Sydney. Without a win so far in the competition, the Lions have shown promise at times but a lack of finishing skills and a habit of switching off at crucial moments have dogged their campaign. Coach Dick Muir admitted as much after a recent game.

"We need to focus for the full 80 minutes. We cannot allow these lapses," he told the Lions website.

The Waratahs have had an up-and-down time so far this season, with two wins and two losses. At home, though, they are a tough side to beat and should possess too much ammunition for a Lions side struggling to deliver a win.

The pick of the weekend games is definitely the Stormers-Hurricanes clash on Saturday evening in Cape Town.

The Stormers' tails will be up after their 33-0 drubbing of the Highlanders last week and the Cape side is looking a polished unit.

With Schalk Burger back at the helm after an injury and a number of players grabbing the opportunity to play Super 14 rugby with both hands, exciting times are ahead for the Stormers.

Sent on the end-of-year tour to Europe with the Springboks last year, young Juan de Jongh is proving to be a revelation at centre, with the loss of Jean de Villiers hardly being felt.
