MY name is Pulane Maake. I am 11 years old and in Grade 6 at Dominican Belgravia School in Johannesburg. This is my second letter of appeal.

MY name is Pulane Maake. I am 11 years old and in Grade 6 at Dominican Belgravia School in Johannesburg. This is my second letter of appeal.

The first appeal was published in Sowetan's nation-building projects and news page last September. It was followed by an interview on Kidz News on SABC television. I am appealing for sponsorship to realise a dream to see myself rubbing shoulders with my peers abroad.

I have been nominated by my teacher, Kim Bechus, to participate in the People to People Leadership Forum in Washington DC in June.

The forum was established by former US president Dwight Eisenhower and is led by his daughter Mary Jean Eisenhower. It seeks to achieve peace through understanding and to instill in youngsters the spirit of making a difference in their communities by developing their leadership skills.

This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to help me realise the opportunity to interact with other kids from all corners of the world. I hope to acquire many empowerment skills that I will impart to others in my school and community as I am a dynamic young leader with a passion for giving back to others. I will appreciate it if individuals, companies and organisations assist me with any amount to help realise this dream.

The total cost of the trip is R50000 and so far we have managed to raise R27000, mostly through Good Samaritans who had read the Sowetanarticle in September.

I am still appealing for sponsorship. It has been very difficult to get sponsors, especially as many companies were reluctant to help due to the recession. Some people have pledged, but have not come through yet.

Fellow South Africans, I would appreciate your generous contributions to assist me realise this opportunity. Should you be interested in assisting, please telephone my mother Evelyn on 082-929-7976, or my principal Dalene Rostovsky on 011-614-6943 or 011-614-6966.

Pulane Maake is an award-winning leader who has excelled academically and in the sporting fields. She is expected to contribute immensely during the People to People Leadership Forum, which, according to information gleaned from the programme's website, allows young people in grades 6 to 12 to investigate specific topics or career interests, while building leadership skills.

She also stands to experience a life-changing educational journey that will surely build a foundation for personal success.

Pulane also stands to make friends and learn how to gain from interaction with total strangers.
