Illegal dicing dumb and dangerous

MOTORSPORT South Africa, the body that controls all motorsport in South Africa, has condemned illegal dicing as "silly and dangerous".

MOTORSPORT South Africa, the body that controls all motorsport in South Africa, has condemned illegal dicing as "silly and dangerous".

Dicing is a generic name for illegal drag racing, which is a competition between two drivers on a public road.

MSA spokesperson Allan Wheeler said dicing was "silly, unnecessary and dangerous", because formalised racing was accessible to anyone with a roadworthy vehicle and a licence.

"Dicing does not always take into account the safety of spectators and the people driving the cars."

He said drivers could obtain a permit from MSA to take part in races organised by the body at protected venues.

These include racecourses such as the Nitro Raceway in Brakpan, Midvaal Raceway in Meyerton, Tarlton International Raceway in Krugersdorp and the ODI Raceway in Pretoria.

Wheeler said the organisation had 15000 members nationwide affiliated to various clubs.

Participants and spectators at formal races were protected by insurance and liability cover.

They could also obtain medical insurance, Wheeler said.

Participants could race at different levels and categories suited to the class of the vehicle to ensure maximum safety, he said.

Racers and spectators also adhered to strict safety rules and regulations, which include:

lThe distance covered on each level and the class of vehicles that participate in each race.

lA fenced-off area for spectators.

lThe presence of an ambulance and trained medical personnel to attend to any injuries.

lThe wearing of protective gear for drivers such as helmets and hard-wearing clothes.

lVehicles also undergo various tests and checks to ensure their roadworthiness and safety.

Meanwhile, Jabu (not his real name), 30, of Soweto, said dicing was for youngsters who wanted to show off. "Spin and dicing is for youngsters who have just bought their cars and want to show off.

"They have no regard for children and other people on the roads."
