Platinum Stars set for major shake-up

THE winds of change are set to blow strongly for North West team Platinum Stars, who were a woeful bunch this past season.

Their disastrous showing landed them among the relegation brigade. They finished 14th on the Premiership log.

Word is that a major change is in the pipeline. The club's bosses are understood to be meeting today and they are set to decide the fate of some of their players.

Coach Steve Komphela listed a number of reasons why his team finds itself where it is.

"We need support from the financial wing to get the right players with the right attitude. The truth is our team is ageing and with all due respect, we have Willem Jackson at 37 and Godfrey Sapula who was 36 and so on.

"The experience is great but there are certain important things that you need too," Komphela said.

"We've had a change of coach, of ownership and also had to adjust to our relocation from Johannesburg to Rustenburg. Prior to that we had played 25 matches in Rustenburg while still based in Johannesburg."

Major rifts among players and a lack of team spirit were also problems, but Komphela feels match officials also played a part in their misfortune.

"There were some horrible decisions taken against us. A case in point is when they denied us our right to win the Telkom Charity Cup.

"The nightmare continued into the league - unfair penalty decisions, red cards flying, and I felt they were gunning for me. This was the first year in my life that I got sent off," he said.

Despite all their woes, some good things came Stars' way too - the return of Tshiamo Seneo and the emergence of youngsters such as Lehlohonolo Masalesa, Coldrin Coetzee, Joseph Malangoane and Reuben Thebakang.
