This signifies a major comeback for Mhlongo, who was almost written off after being diagnosed with breast cancer a few years ago.

Her album, Amakholwa, released last year, has earned her three nominations in the major categories.

She is nominated in the album of the year, best adult contemporary album and female artist of the year categories.

Competing with Mhlongo are Big Nuz, Teargas, Selaelo Selota, Parlotones and the young sensation Culoe De Song.

Another interesting category is the best traditional gospel album category, in which for the first time, the queen of gospel Rebecca Malope has not been nominated. Despite the beautiful double album she released, celebrating her milestone in the genre, the judges did not nominate her.

The gospel singers nominated this year are Lusanda Mcinga and Deborah Fraser. Sipho Makhabane, who has just announced that he is quitting as a recording artist, has been nominated.

He is up against stablemate Hlengiwe Mhlaba, Sechaba and Winnie Mashaba.

Last year's pop Idol winner Sasha-Lee Davids has proved to many that she is talented. She has been nominated in the best pop English album alongside Jerusha, La Vuvuzela and NKD.

In the best maskandi album, Izingane Zoma, Phuzekhemisi, Shabalala Rhythm, Thokozani Langa and the late Mgqumeni have been nominated.

Lira's live DVD recorded at Carnival City has been nominated in the best global chart DVD. Lira has tough competition against Prime Circle, The Plain Truth, Dozi & Nianell, and The Plain Truth.
