BUSINESS confidence rose last month, lifted by higher manufacturing output and evidence that an economic recovery that started in the third quarter had gathered speed.

The South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Sacci) said yesterday the index rose to 83,0 last month from 81,2 in January, responding to positive medium-term economic developments .

"Manufacturing output surprised on the upside in December ... the other one is GDP showing we are picking up momentum and motor car sales, those type of things were positive for the business," said Sacci economist Richard Downing.

Factory output swung into positive territory in the year to December, snapping 14 months of annual contraction. - Reuters
