THE SA Social Security Agency (Sassa) has welcomed the arrest of three people who are believed to be part of a syndicate involved in social grants fraud in its Esikhawini branch near Richards Bay.
The three suspects, Lungile Zondi (Sassa employee), Xolani Shembe (Sassa office volunteer) and Sifiso Ngema (security guard) were arrested last week.
They were arrested after being found in possession of a spying device that is used to steal user IDs and passwords that officials use to register social grants.
The three have already appeared in the Esikhawini magistrate's court facing fraud charges and will appear again next Monday for bail application.
Sassa believes the two colluded with Ngema as he was the only person with access to computers after hours.
Sassa's Mbizeni Mdlalose described the arrest as an important step in the fight against corruption and predicted it would be a serious blow to the networks that are targeting Sassa.
Mdlalose would not say much about the arrests as the matter was now before court "but this shows we are doing everything we can to keep the organisation free of corruption".
