Poor attendance derails Limpopo event

POOR attendance delayed Limpopo 2010 World Cup countdown celebrations by two hours.

POOR attendance delayed Limpopo 2010 World Cup countdown celebrations by two hours.

The event, hosted at the University of Limpopo, was scheduled to start at noon but only started at 2pm.

Disappointed Premier Cassel Mathale, who was supposed to deliver a keynote address, left after 12pm because there was no sign of the event starting by that time.

Polokwane 2010 marketing and communications manager Mantlako Sebaka said the festivities started late because there were very few youths.

"We had to delay the start to ensure that we have the youth in attendance. We are disappointed about the attendance."

His concerns were echoed by the Polokwane 2010 World Cup director Ndavhe Ramakuela, who said there was a need for marketing of and mobilisation for the event.

"The poor attendance is a cause for concern to us, especially with 100 days to the World Cup. We will put awareness campaigns in place to ensure everyone knows about the kickoff."

Polokwane executive mayor Thabo Makunyane was also disappointed by the poor attendance.

When the festivities eventually started, the highlight was the Polokwane City Cup soccer tournament involving 18 primary schools.

Municipal spokesperson Simon Mokoatedi encouraged people to buy tickets for matches in Polokwane.
