Top muso on visit for a TB awareness drive

CRAIG David, one of the UK's well-known R&B stars, flew into Cape Town yesterday to be part of a TB awareness campaign in the country.

David is one of several high-profile international and local celebrities selected to be TB ambassadors.

Immediately after his arrival he went into action - filming sessions for a TB awareness commercial with doctors and medical researchers at the University of Cape Town.

He was last night scheduled to attend a cocktail party hosted by the Department of Health.

Today David will spend the day filming in Khayelitsha and visiting young patients and doctors.

Tomorrow he will continue with filming sessions at two high schools in the city in the morning.

He rounds up his TB filming sessions at Green Point Stadium before flying out in the evening. In a phone interview with Sowetan yesterday, David said: "For me, the TB awareness filming has been an eye-opener. Working with people who are saving lives made me realise that though I have an album out, this is not the time for music but getting involved in saving lives.

"It has been an experience I cherish. People have to know that once they contract TB, they have to finish their (medicine) course, and TB touches everyone, even in London where I live," he said.

On March 29 the R&B star will deliver his new studio album, Signed Sealed Delivered, marking another milestone in a career spanning more than a decade. This will be David's fifth studio album.

According to his recording company, David has always wanted to record an album covering artists and songs that inspired him to get into music in the first place.

Marvin Gaye's Heard It On The Grapevine, Otis Redding's Dock Of The Bay, Stevie Wonder's Signed Sealed Delivered and Curtis Stigers' I Wonder Why are some of the classics covered on this album.

"This album has been quite a challenge in that I left my comfort zone, recording music that has touched me when I was young, and vocally I had to push myself to do the music of Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye."
