The taxi industry has never been fair to their customers. They do as they please. They strike, increase fares without consulting commuters and provide bad service for commuters, especially women and children.
Who represents commuters with these problems?
The Rea Vaya Bus Rapid Transit offers commuters an alternative, but the taxi industry is against this. But commuters should decide about this and not the industry.If the industry wants to be taken seriously it must clean up its act, treat commuters with the respect they deserve, engage them before increasing fares and provide roadworthy and reliable vehicles.
How often do you see a broken-down taxi on the side of the road and a taxi driver refusing to reimburse passengers or to offer alternative transport quickly? With other modes of transport this is organised quickly and commuters are not left stranded.
Rea Vaya and other bus companies have insurance for commuters. You can't say the same about the bulldogs (taxis).
The taxi industry must be regulated, must pay taxes, must register their drivers and must consult with their customers.
They must be professional if they want to be taken seriously. This is the quickest money-making transport system, but with the worst service.
It is time the industry gets a wake-up call. It should dance to the tune of the commuters and not the other way round. The government must protect commuters against these bullies.
