Scores injured in high number of collisions in KwaZulu-Natal

DESPITE high-profile road safety campaigns and visibility of traffic officers, KwaZulu-Natal continues to experience more road casualties.

DESPITE high-profile road safety campaigns and visibility of traffic officers, KwaZulu-Natal continues to experience more road casualties.

In the past 24 hours more than 60 people were injured in separate crashes involving buses, taxis and trucks.

Between 5am and 11am yesterday rescue teams had their hands full assisting scores of injured people around Durban.

The first accident involved 15 vehicles that collided at the intersection of the M1 Higginson highway and Havenside Road junction in Chatsworth, Durban South.

While the cause of the accident remains the subject of police investigation, public transport seems to be the major contributor in a number of road accidents.

Transport Minister S'bu Ndebele last week emphasised road safety as one of the key priorities for the department.

He was addressing a two-day National Road Safety summit in Johannesburg attended by provincial transport MECs, officials and transport entities, road safety stakeholders and delegates from all provinces.

"We have no other option but to act individually, collectively, and as national government and through multilateral formations to stop this carnage. It is time for all of us to commit to a Decade of Action for Road Safety."

However, Ndebele's words seem to have fallen on deaf ears in KwaZulu-Natal yesterday.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Jeff Wicks said yesterday they had responded to a number of accidents. "Six taxi passengers were injured when 15 cars collided and jammed traffic in the morning.

"In another incident three people were injured when two vehicles collided at an intersection in Morningside."

In a separate incident, 16 people were injured when a taxi collided with a truck on the M1 Higginson highway near Klaarwater, west of Durban.

Fifteen people were injured when a taxi and bus collided on the N2 and the M25 KwaMashu highway intersection.

A total of 18 people were injured after a collision involving two cars and a taxi on the M4 Southern freeway.

Ten people were injured when their taxi and a car collided on the South Coast Road near the N2.
