RADIO station North West FM is going through a cashflow crisis that has resulted in employees not being paid for February.

The commercial station based in Kroondal, Rustenburg, was launched two years ago. A source at the station said presenters had not been paid for February.

Management had promised that the money would be in the bank yesterday. But according to a source, this did not happen.

The station also owes Sentech, which provides signals for broadcasters. Sentech was not available for comment at the time of going to print.

"We had a staff meeting last Friday at which we were told that the station was not generating money. The situation is not good. It is a cat-and-mouse situation," the source said.

At the meeting management told staff that the change of government in the province had affected the station's income.

"They said the change of guard in government has resulted in the station not getting enough business from government."

The source, however, blamed bad management.

"It would have been nice if they gave us letters noting that we have not been paid. Trying to convince creditors verbally that one has not been paid does not work," he said.

Station manager Shadrack Menyatswe was not available for comment.

The programmes manager, Raymond Makamo, denied that the employees were not paid.

"That is not true. We have been paid," Makamo said.

North West FM's presenters have extensive experience after working at Radio Bop and Radio Mmabatho, as well as various commercial and public broadcasting stations in the country.

The station was launched two years ago and broadcasts in Setswana and English.
