ATHLETICS South Africa interim board member James Moloi has been elected new president of Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA).

CGA is the most powerful ASA province.

Moloi took over from Snowy Matthews, who was part of the ASA board suspended by the South African Sport Confederation and Olympic Committee.

Internationally renowned runner, Hendrick Ramaala did not stand as he was only allowed into the emotionally charged meeting as an observer.

"The problem is that athletes did not have a say during the meeting, club presidents came to the meeting to elect themselves.

"I must say we are happy Sam Mlangeni is part of the new board at CGA," said Ramaala, who is being lobbied by athletes to lead ASA as its elected president in April.

"We will also have Oupa Maruping and Ruben Ramolefi coming on board. As athletes, we want to be at the fore-front of running athletics in this province."

Ramaala said: "I'm disappointed because I was not allowed to compete for the election, we will do our home work for the ASA election.

"I have been approached by a number of provinces and associate members to make myself available for ASA president.
