EMPLOYMENT opportunities will be created in North West municipalities to boost human capacity in areas identified as lacking, North West Premier Maureen Modiselle said yesterday.
"We hope to recruit in advance a force of financial management, town engineering and the old town secretary experts to beef up our local government capacity," she said in her state of the province address in Mafikeng.
This would enhance the Siyeza Manje programme that had already deployed artisans to municipalities, she said.
Modiselle said while dealing systematically with issues affecting the local government service delivery value chain, the government would also engage in the day-to-day service delivery matters of bulk infrastructure development.
"The bucket eradication programme will continue," she said. "We are interacting with water boards to structure a sustainable water supply management system and sewer disposal system that does not burden poor municipalities."
She announced that special meetings would be convened between sector departments and local government to allow the departments to make budget commitments to local government as approved by a prioritisation process led by her office.
"Local government will facilitate municipal turnaround plans that must inform inter-govermental relations forums.
"The plan must instruct government towards municipal demarcation reviews guided by functionality and potential wastage of per capita cost of democracy," she said. - Sapa
