Serial killer suspect trial delayed after escape bid

THE uMzinto sugarcane serial killer suspect has been moved from King Edward Hospital to Westville Correctional Services Hospital.

Thozamile Taki, 39, and eight other inmates escaped from Westville Prison after they broke through prison's cells.

Taki was the only one who was unsuccessful after he fell from the fourth floor roof and injured himself.

His attempted escape was just hours before the conclusion of his trial in Ramsgate high court, where he is facing murder charges relating to 13 decomposed bodies of women that were found in sugarcane plantations.

The attempted escape has delayed his trial, in which more than 80 out of 108 state witnesses testified.

Westville Correctional Service spokesperson Nokuthula Zikhali said she was not certain of the injuries Taki suffered though insisted that she checked with the hospital's staff daily on his progress.

"We have not read a report from the doctor who assessed him at the state hospital, but I believe he is recovering since they have released him to us," said Zikhali.

Taki now faces a charge of trying to escape from lawful custody.
