Using the arts to heal and inform

THE Fodo Foundation is a Durban-based organisation that uses the arts for a range of educational purposes. It is focused on teaching the youth.

One of the activities it is involved in is the teaching of traditional culture and values by playing and making traditional instruments.

The foundation is launching a Gauteng branch on Saturday at a gala dinner at the Lekgotla eatery in Sandton.

The event is called Arts Meet Health, and the keynote speaker is Minister of Health Aaron Motsoaledi.

The dinner, which has individuals and companies booking a table for 10 for R10000 to raise funds for the foundation, will see Afro-jazz artist Lu Dlamini and her band take to the stage.

The occasion will also be used to introduce various projects for the 2010 Arts For Life sector.

"This is the umbrella function for fundraising events such as the Cupid Acknowledges HIV and Aids event, the Haiti Aid concerts and other relief concepts," the Fodo organisers said.

"This is the sector that will be ready to assist in situations where disaster befalls communities."

Another activity the foundation is involved in is Edu-dance, which is a holistic, fun way of integrating dance with any subject to explain concepts to youngsters in an accessible way.

"The method uses active, enjoyable learning and makes subjects such as languages, maths, science, biology and health come alive," the Fodo Foundation organisers said.

Edu-dance encompasses creativity within structure and stimulates the learner's physical, intellectual and emotional facets.

"This year our subject is health and we are working on logistics and partnerships to be able to take this programme to schools."
