Written by one of the most talented young writers, Thapelo Motloung, Like Cain and Abel opens on March 10 and runs until March 21.
Motloung wrote the two-hander in response to society's widespread lack of acceptance of homosexuals.
Like Cain and Abel explores the labels and prejudices that gay and bisexual people are subjected to in day-to-day life, with an underlying message of acceptance, understanding and tolerance of those perceived as different.
Though gays and lesbians can be legally married in South Africa, they still experience a lot of victimisation over their sexual orientation. In many cases they are assaulted, raped and murdered for who they are. Violence against them occurs everywhere - in schools, the workplace, public places and in their homes.
Motloung's story centres on two brothers who meet at church on the wedding day of one of them, sparking a chain of dramatic events related to sexual orientation.
"It is a complex and emotional tale of betrayal, hatred, forgiveness and family ties. The show is compelling, especially for those who relish enlightening, provocative subject matter," he explains.
Like Cain and Abel features Siyabonga Hlatshwayo in the lead role. Hlatshwayo has worked with Motloung on several of his productions.
Tickets cost R45 on weekdays and R55 from Fridays to Sundays, and are available at Computicket or at the door.
