Demoralised T raffic officers to stay at home over weekends

TRAFFIC officers in the Mbombela municipality claim they are demoralised because employers have continuously failed to pay them overtime since the beginning of 2007.

TRAFFIC officers in the Mbombela municipality claim they are demoralised because employers have continuously failed to pay them overtime since the beginning of 2007.

The 26 traffic officers were recently found not guilty in disciplinary hearings that emanated from their blocking a main gate to the municipality during a protest over the money on October 29 last year.

To make matters worse their weekend overtime has been cancelled, meaning that motorists can do as they please in Nelspruit since traffic officers will stay at home over weekends.

Most traffic cops accused the municipality of lying about not having money while employing external lawyers to handle their disciplinary hearings between December last year and January this year.

Mbombela municipality spokesperson Lucky Ngomane confirmed that all the traffic officers were found not guilty during disciplinary hearings.

He said he could not immediately respond further since he needed to consult with the relevant officials.
