It will be a night to forget for Cosmos

BASEMENT club Jomo Cosmos automatic relegation to the National First Division looks set to be confirmed tonight.

BASEMENT club Jomo Cosmos automatic relegation to the National First Division looks set to be confirmed tonight.

They meet Mamelodi Sundowns in an Absa Premiership match at Rand Stadium.

Jomo Sono's side have done little to avoid the dreaded chop and face a Downs side with seasoned campaigners who will be hard to beat.

The Brazilians won't be doing Ezenkosi any favours as they will be hoping for a miracle to dethrone title-holders SuperSport United.

Downs' title ambitions went up in smoke when they played to a 4-all draw against Moroka Swallows at home on Friday. Their forward Katlego Mphela admitted after that match that the title was well out of their reach.

Mphela said they had only themselves to blame.

"Playing to a draw against Swallows really affected our chances of winning the title but we'll bounce back next season," he said.

Coach Hristo Stoich- kov will win the championship only if United falter in their remaining two matches and Downs win theirs.

But it is highly unlikely that United will slip up against Bidvest Wits tonight and AmaZulu in their season-ending clash on March 6.

Cosmos meet the Dube Birds in Dobsonville, while Downs host Lamontville Golden Arrows in their last matches of the season.

The fact that Cosmos still have a chance to play in the NFD playoffs could be a motivational factor for Ezenkosi.

But their fate is in the hands of fellow relegation candidates Mpumalanga Black Aces, who look a better bet to play in the promotion-relegation event.

Mphela is expected to lead his side's attack, while Bongani Theletsane is a player to watch from the hosts.

It still remains to be seen how Sono will motivate his players to overcome the huge challenges ahead of them.
