NATIONAL Police Commissioner Bheki Cele has assured the 32 teams taking part in the World Cup that there is no need for them to worry about security during the tournament.

NATIONAL Police Commissioner Bheki Cele has assured the 32 teams taking part in the World Cup that there is no need for them to worry about security during the tournament.

Addressing coaches from the 32 teams and Fifa top-brass at Sun City in North West, Cele said government would deploy 41000 well-trained South African Police Service members specifically for the tournament.

"Don't get worried, there will still be about 110000 police officials to ensure South Africans in general are safe. We will also take good care of the fans who will be coming here for the World Cup," Cele said.

The government has budgeted R1,3billion for security during the tournament. "Our security plan has been approved by Fifa. Preparations for the World Cup are at an advanced stage. We also have the intelligence that has been briefing us on a daily basis on security matters locally, nationally and internationally.

"We are working closely with other law-enforcement agencies of the world on security issues. Cabinet has also decided that all airports in the country will fall under the control of the SAPS. The SAPS and defence force will be responsible for manning all the ports of entry. We are also in regular contact with Interpol, who will send between 150 and 200 members to South Africa."

He said on May 10 they would meet Interpol's investigators in France around international security matters. "We have met all the police chiefs of Southern Africa to deal with the safety of fans in the region. They are also bringing their police members to be part of the police force for the Cup," Cele said.
