DIFFICULTY in accessing travel documents makes migrants vulnerable to organised crime and human trafficking syndicates, the Department of Home Affairs has said.

Speaking at a human trafficking stakeholders workshop in Boksburg, Ekurhuleni, Deputy Minister of Home Affairs Malusi Gigaba said southern African countries needed to "regularise" migration.

Gigaba said the tightening of border control was not enough to stop migrants from entering South Africa by illegal means.

He said the provision of identity and travel documents would enable "ease of movement" and and curb cross- border crime.

He said a bill would be tabled in Parliament but would not be ready for the Soccer World Cup in June.

Gigaba said a coordinated response between various government departments was crucial to fight trafficking and deal with issues related to migration. - Namhla Tshisela
