Makhanya back for Mbabane friendlies

DESPITE kicking his heels at Orlando Pirates, almost-forgotten Bucs winger Joseph "Dukuduku" Makhanya is back with the national soccer team.

DESPITE kicking his heels at Orlando Pirates, almost-forgotten Bucs winger Joseph "Dukuduku" Makhanya is back with the national soccer team.

Makhanya has been included in the South African Football Association Development squad, popularly known as Amabinneplaas, to travel to Mbabane this week to play two friendlies against Swaziland's Isihlangu on Thursday and Sunday. The team is using the two friendlies to prepare for the African Nations Championship.

South Africa will start their Nations Championship campaign with a short trip to Botswana for a date with the Zebras on March 14.

Besides Makhanya, the other inactive players in the team coached by Safa technical director Serame Letsoaka are Thuso Phala, Fanyana Mokoena, Jacob Mokhasi, Michael Nkambule, Wayne Matle and Mkhanyiseli Siwahla.

Team manager Barney Kujane said: "Safa has decided to use our Under-23s for the Nations Championship, but the problem with the two games against Botswana is that we won't have the kind of players we require.

"As a result, we have decided to rope in a few over-age players for the opening qualifier against Botswana."
