ANNUAL income from freight transportation for 2009 decreased by 4,2percent compared with 2008, according to Stats SA's Land Transportation Survey.

Income from freight transportation for December 2009 increased by 7,7percent compared with December 2008.

Stats SA said the main contributors to the fourth-quarter increase were mining and quarrying products and containers.

However, these increases were counteracted by decreases in other freight, agriculture and forestry primary products, and manufactured food, beverages and tobacco products.

The volume of goods transported decreased by 7,7percent between 2008 and 2009 and by 5,6percent between the fourth quarters of 2008 and 2009. - Sapa
