Top awards for young communicators

PROVINCIAL heats of the yearly Anglo American and Sowetan Young Communicators Awards will start in May and the finals will be held in August.

PROVINCIAL heats of the yearly Anglo American and Sowetan Young Communicators Awards will start in May and the finals will be held in August.

Originally the provincial eliminations have taken place from march and the finals have always taken place in June, a time when South Africa will be preoccupied with the much-awaited Fifa World Cup tournament this year.

The awards - open to high school pupils in Grades 11 and 12 who do not speak English as a first language - have been developed around the following pillars:

lThe improvement of presentation and oral communication skills;

lLeadership development and personal growth;

lThe improvement of oral English communication among second or third language speakers;

This Young Communicators Awards youth development project also seeks to attain these following aims:

lEncourage proficiency in English, the generally accepted language of business and academia, by promoting the core principles of good speech-making and presentation skills;

lEncourage a pioneering spirit among the young people of South Africa;

lEmbrace the concept of Nation Building, which seeks to empower people to take control of their lives and make a meaningful contribution to their communities;

lEncourage young people to address key issues facing their communities and the country and to find solutions to these issues;

lPrepare South Africa's learners for the professional working environment; and

lNurture assertiveness and confidence among our young people, our leaders of the future

Since its launch in 1994 this project - which is among Anglo American's corporate social investment and responsibility activities - continues to uncover the potential leaders of our country.

For Sowetan, Anglo American, the Aggrey Klaaste Nation Building Foundation and the Department of Education the awards are a crucial youth development project.

In 1988 the late Sowetan editor-in-chief and former chairperson of Sowetan's nation-building projects, Aggrey Klaaste, introduced a vision that would seek to repair the enormous social, economic and political damage of South Africa's past.

This vision, called Nation Building, seeks to empower people to take control of their lives and make a meaningful contribution to their communities.

Nation Building is articulated through the staging of various youth and community development projects that thrive on partnerships between like-minded individuals, groups, organisations and institutions, one of which is the Young Communicators Awards.
