Annual arts festival back on track

THE annual Masakhane Arts and Cultural Youth Festival that had been due to be held in December last year will finally takes place this year.

THE annual Masakhane Arts and Cultural Youth Festival that had been due to be held in December last year will finally takes place this year.

Happening for the 20th time, Masakhane was put on hold because of a lack of financial help but now it is back on track looking to give youth a platform.

The Masakhane Arts and Culture Youth Festival will run from March 20 to 22 at the Emndeni Youth Centre and Umthombo wolwazi Multi Purpose Centre in Soweto.

Mbali Shezi, one of the organisers, says: "We made no major changes to the programme, but this time around we are looking at attracting Gauteng groups. Limited budget and a lack of residential accommodation for visiting groups are among the main reasons for shifting the focus only to Gauteng groups."

The festival invites groups that specialise in music, dance, drama and poetry to be part of this memorable event.

"Groups from Gauteng and want to participate in the festival are welcome but will have to arrange their own accommodation," Shezi says.

She says the festival will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Sharpeville Massacre.

The festival will also give an opportunity to businesses to market and sell their products and visual artists to display their works.
