Man crushed by bakkie

A MAN was killed yesterday in a "truly bizarre" accident on Kloof Falls Road, Kloof, KwaZulu-Natal paramedics said.

"It is believed that the man heard a knocking sound coming from beneath his bakkie.

"He pulled to the side of the road and jacked up his car, crawling underneath to see if anything had come loose," Netcare 911 spokesperson Jeff Wicks said.

He said while under the car the jack gave way, pinning the man between the undercarriage and road.

"The man apparently used his cellphone to alert his partner to his distress," Wicks said." But when the Netcare 911 paramedics arrived they found him still wedged under the vehicle with only his feet visible."

eThekwini Metro firefighters lifted the vehicle and freed the man, who was no longer breathing. He was declared dead on the scene.

Meanwhile, two people were seriously injured in an accident in Harrismith, also yesterday morning. Two heavy-duty trucks collided on the N3 at the Bergview interchange. One of the vehicles, which was carrying steel coils, overturned.

N3 Toll Concessions spokesperson Con Roux said the coils had damaged the road.

"A stretch of the N3 at the interchange was completely closed to traffic and motorists were only able to utilise the on- and off-ramps on either side of the accident in order to deviate around it," Roux said.
