Organised by Fifa's medical subcommittee, the three-day conference will be attended by various sports physicians across the globe, soccer greats and administrators.
Local Organising Committee chief medical officer Victor Ramathesele said the event will help them showcase South Africa's readiness for the 2010 Fifa World Cup.
Today delegates will deal with the 2010 Fifa World Cup pre-competition medical assessment for participating players handled by Fifa medical assessment chairperson Jiri Dvorak.
Popular South African medico Sello Motaung will also deal with the on-pitch treatment of football injuries. Others will deal with head injuries and concussion. Nutrition in football, the child player, warm-up programmes to prevent injuries and emergency situations in football medicine are also on the programme on day one.
Tomorrow, delegates will deal with the respect for women through football, promoting hygiene through football and using the game to prevent chronic disease.
The use of traditional African medicines will be dealt with extensively by experts from the continent as well as a project by Ithuseng to empower local professional players.
Sibusiso Ntshangase will do a presentation on alcohol and sexual behaviour among local players and the implications for life-skills intervention.
On Sunday, Zambian soccer icon Kalusha Bwalya will do a presentation on doping matters. Former Bafana Bafana captain Lucas Radebe and Mike Lambert will also be part of the programme on the day.
