downs left fuming

MAMELODI Sundowns and Moroka Swallows will resume their abandoned match at Super Stadium tonight where they left off - in the 35th minute with the Beautiful Birds' 2-0 lead intact.

MAMELODI Sundowns and Moroka Swallows will resume their abandoned match at Super Stadium tonight where they left off - in the 35th minute with the Beautiful Birds' 2-0 lead intact.

This decision has not gone down well with Sundowns, with spokesperson Alex Shakoane criticising the PSL for a lack of consistency.

The match was called off on Wednesday when one of the stadium's floodlights failed moments after Vincent Kobala netted Swallows' second goal. Siyabonga Nomvethe had opened the scoring in the ninth minute.

"We are not happy at all about the fact that we are not starting the game from scratch," Shakoane said yesterday. "The circumstances that led to the abandonment of this match are similar to the ones that led to our game against Santos being postponed last year."

The league concluded that the match was abandoned due to a man-made fault rather than bad weather .

"We went by the reports of the match referee and match commissioner, who both said the match was abandoned due to floodlight failure," PSL chief executive Kjetil Siem said.

"The rules clearly state that if this is the case the match must be continued within 48 hours of its abandonment or at the CEO's discretion." The match resumes at 7.30pm.

The match between Kaizer Chiefs and Mpumalanga Black Aces, which was called off on Wednesday due to inclement weather, will start from scratch on Wednesday next week.

Other fixtures scheduled for tomorrow night have also been moved to Wednesday, with the exception of the Aces-Bloemfontein Celtic clash, which will take place as scheduled at Puma Rugby Stadium at 8.15pm.
