WHAT A HEAD TURNER!

WHAT is it about this car and why are people so preoccupied with it? These were the questions that ran through my mind as I drove on the N1 after work in the new Range Rover Sport Supercharged.

I pulled up at a garage to buy bread, and there stood a hunk that looked like he had just stepped out of a Hollywood movie, but as soon as he realised the monster of a Land Rover that was my transport he backed off. My loss.

The Ranger Rover is an intimidating car, no wonder Julius Malema drives it.

The car is a looker and can keep your granny smiling all the way when you take her out for lunch.

As for the car's capabilities, they are out of this world. A massive vehicle such as this can find it hard to behave around corners, but the Ranger Rover Sport demonstrated no such weakness.

For the duration of the test the Sport helped me to move a few items around and take my son and niece to the sports day without it feeling out of place.

Someone asked what the car offers in the safety and comfort departments in comparison to other rival SUVs.

The Range Rover can easily go to Nkandla and back without any sweat. It reminded me of a funeral I attended in Dundee in northern KwaZulu-Natal six years ago.

Access to the village was difficult and tough. The Range Rover Sport would have been a perfect car for that mission.

The car's levels of interior craftsmanship and refinement and significant improvements to both on-road and off-road driving dynamics enhance its stylish newappearance.

The introduction of new systems such as Adaptive Dynamics, working in conjunction with the existing Dynamic Response, known as active roll control (ARC), and the addition of the road-focused Dynamic Program to the Terrain Response system help enhance agility and ride quality.

Further improvements to the Terrain Response system ensure that off-road capability is kept at expected class-leading levels.

The Range Rover Sport's stylish, muscular exterior has been updated to provide a cleaner, more sculpted feel. Striking signature LED headlamps combine with a new two-bar grille, front bumpers and wings to create a more sporting and aerodynamic stance. At the rear, new light clusters and a revised bumper design mirror the smoother front end.

The interior has been redesigned, using higher quality materials, soft-touch finishes and superior craftsmanship to create a premium environment.

The 5,0-litre V8 supercharged petrol engine is new and delivers better driveability than the previous model.

It delivers a refined and responsive drive experience, producing an impressive 375kW of power and 625Nm of torque.

The new portable audio interface allows connectivity to an array of personal audio storage devices, USB sticks and MP3 players, enabling the various devices' functions to be accessed and controlled via the facia-mounted touch screen system. One of the connectivity ports is a dedicated Apple iPodTM point made exclusively by Land Rover.
