MATRIC candidates who failed their exams last year are going to get a second chance.

MATRIC candidates who failed their exams last year are going to get a second chance.

The Department of Basic Education said yesterday more than 97000 matriculants are expected to write the Grade 12 supplementary exam s.

Candidates who failed two subjects or missed exams because of illness or wish to improve results to gain university entrance will sit for the supplementary exams.

The exams start today with German, Portuguese, Hebrew and electrical technology and will be completed on March 25 with engineering graphics and design.

"The national Department of Basic Education has taken over the administration of the supplementary examinations in Mpumalanga, where about 8000 matriculants will sit for the examinations," said the department's statement.

Five matric examination papers were leaked in the province before last year's exams. Thirteen people, including an official from the department, were arrested and have appeared in court several times. The Hawks are still investigating the case.

In Gauteng, 25000 candidates registered for a second chance. The department has been offering intensive extra lessons for candidates to be ready for the exams.
