Santaco chides taxi branches

THE South African National Taxi Council will not tolerate attempts by two of its Gauteng branches to derail the national conference scheduled for next month.

THE South African National Taxi Council will not tolerate attempts by two of its Gauteng branches to derail the national conference scheduled for next month.

Santaco general secretary Philip Taaibosch said yesterday that the greater Johannesburg and the West Rand regions have not held their elections and want to postpone the national elections to June. He said that would not happen because Santaco's constitution had no provision for the delay of the conference.

"We are not going to budge. Santaco's constitution has a provision to appoint an administrator to take office until the national elections," Taaibosch said.

He said a delay in the regional elections would affect the election of provincial structures. Northern Cape, North West, Free State, Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal and Limpopo have already held their conferences.

He said the term of regional and provincial structures had already lapsed. "The term for the regional officials ended in September while those of provincial leaders ended in November. The officials are just there unofficially," he said.

Chairperson of the West Rand Regional Council, Amos Magodielo, said they would hold their regional congress in June. He said the national body had not spoken to them about preparations for the regional and provincial meetings.
