Closer will have a brief run at the Market Theatre in Newtown from March 25 to May 9. Written by Marber and directed by Maake ka Ncube, it boasts a star-studded cast that includes Fezile Mpela, Sibusiso Radebe, Linda Sokhulu and Lindiwe Matshikiza.
Mpela, who has a reputable profile both on television and on the stage, is a talented actor.
He was born in Krugersdorp in 1973, and Mpela has appeared in television several shows, such as Mzansi, Generations, 7de Laan, Song Vir Katryn, Molo Fish II, Isidingo, Vive La Difference, Going Up, Homelands, Gaabo Motho, Fela's TV, Soul City and Kelebone.
Sokhulu, who is also a talented actress, has featured in shows such as Sokhulu & Partners, Generations, Ubizo - The Calling and A Place Called Home.
Marber's Closer is a sad, savvy, often funny play that takes a steely, unblinking look at the world of relationships and lets you come to your own conclusions.
Marber tells his story in short, staccato scenes in which the unspoken is as loud as the spoken word.
The show premiered in 1997 at the Royal National Theatre in London. In 2004, Closer was made into a film directed by Mike Nichols and starred Natalie Portman as Alice, Julia Roberts, Jude Law and Clive Owen.
Maake ka Ncube directed this play with great success about 10 years ago with an all-white cast.
He now returns to the play with a highly acclaimed all-black cast.
The play is set in contemporary Johannesburg, and gains a new set of resonances in our present-day context.
