Groenewald was tested after the SA cruiserweight fight he lost in a fourth-round stoppage to Thabiso Mchunu in Bloemfontein on January 22, Boxing SA chairperson Peter Ngatane has confirmed.
"That is the report we received from the South African Institute for Drug Free Sport," said Ngatane, while acting chief Loyiso Mtya said Gronewald was aware of the result.
"I have told them," he said.
Groenewald and company will give direction to this case. If they accept the result a formal hearing will be conducted but if they want to contest it sample B, which is taken with sample A but kept sealed, will be opened in front of them and tested in their presence.
Ngatane explained that two specimens are taken after every title fight. One is taken to the laboratory and examined. If something is detected the fighter and the ruling body are informed. He or she is given the opportunity to accept the result or contest it.
Ngatane said they were waiting for the institute to make a final decision about Jared Lovett, who failed a drug test in July.
The institute found Lovett used Stanozolol, which helps in the development of muscles. Lovett, 22, was voted Prospect of 2008.
Groenewald, 32, is the former ABU junior middle, WBU middle, British Masters and WBU International super middleweight titlist.
