Sarafina makes a return

KING of African theatre Mbongeni Ngema is ready to deliver the fourth instalment of his popular musical Sarafina.

KING of African theatre Mbongeni Ngema is ready to deliver the fourth instalment of his popular musical Sarafina.

Ngema, who is recruiting new actors for Sarafina 4, said the production would be ready for visitors to the Fifa World Cup, which kicks off on June 11.

With his other musical, Gert Sibande Lion of the East, also scheduled to be staged at the State Theatre in Pretoria during June and July, Ngema will have two shows running at the same time.

Sarafina first opened at the Market Theatre in Johannesburg in 1987 and then went to the Lincoln Centre in New York before heading for Broadway, where it ran for eight years.

It also toured the UK, Australia, Japan and Jamaica.

To date Sarafina is the biggest and most successful musical ever produced on the continent. It was later filmed as a motion picture starring Leleti Khumalo and Whoopi Goldberg.

"As part of the cultural celebrations for 2010, Sarafina will once more be seen by thousands of international visitors who will be here for the Fifa World Cup as well as South Africans in general," Ngema said.

Ngema is searching for young talent that will form part of the cast of Sarafina.

Auditions will be in Durban on March 4 and 5 and in Joburg on March 11 and 12.
