Downs: no time for love

MAMELODI Sundowns' agenda on Sunday has nothing to do with Cupid or love.

MAMELODI Sundowns' agenda on Sunday has nothing to do with Cupid or love.

Rather, Patrice Motsepe's boys have pain in mind as they plan to tighten the screws on SuperSport United.

Downs host Santos at Super Stadium at 3.30pm in an Absa Premiership match that United will be keeping a keen eye on all the way from Swaziland, where they play Mbabane Swallows in the African Champions League.

As towering defender Matthew Booth says, character has been a hallmark of his team and now that coach Hristo Stoichkov has the full arsenal of stars at his disposal, it is a matter of the Bulgarian mentor using cunning and precision when playing his aces.

He got it right with the substitution of Surprise Moriri for Franklin Cale on Wednesday against Platinum Stars, with Moriri netting the winner.

"I have to say the guys have shown a lot of character. It has not been easy every time United went six points ahead of us and we had to keep in touch with them. We have certainly been telling each other to play the game of our lives," Booth said.

There is no telling what secrets the former United twosome of Lerato Chabangu and Elias Pelembe have expounded on but it is a safe bet that Stoichkov would have listened intently.

"I think there is a great understanding, especially in defence - we get each other almost at a sixth-sense level," Booth said.

The People's Team will come out with all guns blazing, especially Tyren Arendse, who might make Downs rue the day they let him go.

Boebie Solomons' team have had rotten luck since the new year kicked off, and in addition to the back-to-back defeats at the hands of United and Platinum Stars, they were held to a 3-all draw by Free State Stars.
