Wasteman incinerator closure date extended

THE closure date of a Wasteman-operated incinerator in Klerksdorp has been extended from February 15 to March 9, the department of environmental affairs said yesterday.

THE closure date of a Wasteman-operated incinerator in Klerksdorp has been extended from February 15 to March 9, the department of environmental affairs said yesterday.

Spokesperson Albi Modise said that the environmental management inspectorate, known as the Green Scorpions, granted the extension on Tuesday.

It followed a site inspection by the Green Scorpions on February 5, during which it was found that a significant amount of work had been done in a short time to upgrade and refurbish the site.

This had resulted in a substantial decrease in fugitive emissions. The inspectorate first visited Wasteman's premises in November.

It found that the Klerksdorp incinerator was in contravention of many of its permit conditions.

A final compliance notice served on Wasteman on December 24 gave the company 35 working days (until February 15) to cease operations at Klerksdorp.

Wasteman had to give reasons why its permits should not be suspended or revoked.

Wasteman objected to the notice and asked that its instructions be suspended, a request still under consideration by Environment Minister Buyelwa Sonjica.

Modise said a visual inspection of Wasteman indicated that the incineration process had been optimised with more efficient airflow and an improved combustion efficiency.

This had yet to be confirmed by emission test results which must be submitted to the department at the end of the week.

A safety health and environmental officer would be stationed at Wasteman until the proposed date of closure to oversee its operations and ensure compliance with protocols, procedures and conditions of applicable permits.

Modise said the extension would allow for emission tests to be considered as part of the application for suspension and objection. - Sapa
