United to fly out on high note

BEFORE jetting off to Swaziland to kick-start their African Champions League campaign on Sunday, SuperSport United ensured they stayed in control on the home front by clocking a 2-1 away win over Santos yesterday.

By overpowering industrious Santos at home, United left neighbours and their nearest competitors Mamelodi Sundowns in no doubt that if they want the title to change addresses, they will have to work hard for the privilege.

The scene of United's first-leg foray into the continental spectacle is Mbabane Stadium, against that country's champions Mbabane Swallows.

United coach Gavin Hunt has said before that one of their objectives for the year is to equal Sundowns' league record of three successive titles.

A reasonable ambition, but with Downs breathing down their necks, could the continental competition prove a distraction?

United boss Khulu Sibiya is on record as saying the condensed format of this season afforded a South African team the chance to win the Champions League.

United striker Anthony Laffor said: "I don't think we have anything to worry about. We have so many good players. Fatigue is not even a possibility.

"We have not discussed (Mbabane) Swallows as a team yet, but obviously we always play to win."

The Liberian captain is no stranger to SuperSport's opponents and remembers them from his past life with Jomo Cosmos.

"We played a pre-season friendly. They are a good side who play great football," Laffor said.
