Two weeks ago Sowetan reported that the DD Dliwayo Primary School, which has branches in Soweto and Ekurhuleni, was operating illegally.
The school was ordered to close in December after a pupil was raped on the premises.
The department has been telling the school's directors to shut down since 2006. The franchise of primary schools had applied for registration in 2002. In 2007 they were told that their application was unsuccessful.
This week the department's Charles Phahlane said: "The schools previously operated as DD Dliwayo, and when the department informed them to close their operations at the end of last year, they changed the name to Vine Foundation Phase and Senior Primary School and continued operating from the same premises."
He said parents should not be fooled by people who changed the names of their unregistered schools and continued operating.
