Motorist shot, robbed

GUNMEN fired openly at a motorist in Newcastle, northern KwaZulu-Natal, and made off with cash and goods valued at R62000.

GUNMEN fired openly at a motorist in Newcastle, northern KwaZulu-Natal, and made off with cash and goods valued at R62000.

The unnamed victim and his family were travelling along Memel Road heading to Gauteng when they came under attack from a passing vehicle.

Police spokesperson Shooz Magudulela said the gunmen fired shots at random. "The suspects shot the car tyres and then forced the vehicle off the road. The victims were then robbed at gunpoint of their belongings including cash of R12000, jewellery valued at R50000 and their cellphones."

Magudulela said it was not clear what exactly happened but the victims might have been followed.

He said it appeared the victims were on their way to buy retail goods because they own a store in Newcastle.

Police urged anyone with information to contact them on 034-314-6193.

In another incident, a 41-year-old man was robbed of R18000 in cash at his home in Dundee.

The man had withdrawn the cash from a bank. Magudulela said the man was followed to his home by three men who later robbed him.

"The suspects took all the money, his cellphone and car keys. We are still investigating and no one has been arrested," Magudulela said.
