Athletes demand a say

SOUTH African athletes yesterday described the election of Athletics Gauteng North's board as unacceptable and demanded representation.

SOUTH African athletes yesterday described the election of Athletics Gauteng North's board as unacceptable and demanded representation.

"They have elected themselves despite having failed to transform athletics in the past 15 years," said Sam Mlangeni, an athletes' representative.

"We are disturbed by the manner in which AGN has treated former and current athletes in Tshwane and surrounding areas.

"We have athletes like Khotso Mokoena, Geraldine Pillay, Shadrack Hoff, Sam Molokomme, Stephen Mokoka and LJ (Louis) van Zyl who are based in Gauteng North.

"As representatives of the athletes, we want to reiterate that athletes must be represented on all the provincial boards of ASA.

"It is high time that people understand that no one is qualified to run athletics without the involvement of athletes.

"We are aware that certain veteran administrators are trying to position themselves for the board because of elections in April.

We will not work with people who have brought our sports into disrepute. What the AGN board has done is an insult.

"We appeal to all provinces who don't want transformation to resign now. There are other athletes like Hendrick Ramaala, who is a lawyer , and is capable of leading our federation."
