Do not blame teachers when pupils do poorly

I AM responding to Wednesday news (e.tv) that teachers should be retrained since some of them can't even answer matric question papers.

There is no problem with teachers. Some got their qualifications with distinctions. I am their product and so are you as editor.

A question paper is supposed to be the assessment of knowledge of what has been taught. Pupils are assessed on what is assumed to be what has been taught.

Umalusi should involve subject advisers and these advisers should do the same with teachers, not only towards year-end. Then there will be a clear direction for the pupils. It is ridiculous that pupils should rely on past exam papers and not on the actual recent material of their year of study.

Let us not treat exams as a lottery at the expense of pupils. Pupils who fail and their parents must also be held responsible.

They should ask advice from those who passed and stop pointing fingers at others. It is their future which is at stake.
