ZUMA TOURNEY TO GET R2,5M

MAMELODI Sundowns financial backers Ubuntu-Botho have adopted a yearly soccer tournament in Nkandla in honour of President Jacob Zuma.

MAMELODI Sundowns financial backers Ubuntu-Botho have adopted a yearly soccer tournament in Nkandla in honour of President Jacob Zuma.

Sundowns president Patrice Motsepe is the chairperson of Ubuntu-Botho Investments, the BEE partners of giant insurance company Sanlam.

The highly successful Motsepe has announced that they will be sponsoring Zuma's tournament to the tune of R2,5million for the next five years.

"We are going to give the Msholozi Cup R500000 a year for the next five years. It's a big tournament in Nkandla during the off-season holidays," said Motsepe.

"President Zuma told me about it when we had a chat the other day. He has been spending R34000 from his own pocket to contribute to the tournament.

"I told President Zuma we would finance the tournament, but we want it spread to other parts of KwaZulu-Natal.

"Football development is very important. We have to turn schools in the townships into centres of excellence just like they do in rugby with the schools in the suburbs.

"We won't be able to produce quality players for Bafana Bafana if we neglect development. President Zuma told me he is getting requests for help from other parts of the country."

The Motsepe Foundation last Thursday announced a whopping R30million sponsorship for the Kay Motsepe Cup, which involve just more than 4000 schools.

Sanlam have come on board this year as co-sponsors of this tournament which was won by the Andries "Local is Lekker" Sebola-guided Mokopane Academy in Limpopo last year.

The winners of the revamped tournament will receive R1million, runners-up R600000, third and fourth-placed schools R500000 and R400000 each.

The tournament is run by the South African Football Schools Association, whose president Mandla "Shoes" Mazibuko commended Motsepe for helping them develop soccer.
